Quebec financial firms set up $3.5-million fund to educate on diversity

Financial firms in Quebec have banded together to endow a philanthropic fund to support education projects that promote diversity and inclusiveness, the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec announced on Sunday.

The firms, including several major banks and the Caisse, which is Quebec’s pension-fund manager, say they established the Inclusion fund with $3.5 million after a mass shooting inside a mosque in Quebec City on Jan. 29 in which six people were killed and 19 injured.

A 27-year-old man, Alexandre Bissonnette, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder using a restricted firearm in the mosque shooting.

The purpose of the philanthropic fund, which will be supported by Centraide, is to “build inclusive living environments and promote greater openness in young people to diversity in all its forms,” a news release said.

The money will be used to finance education and awareness programs in schools over the next five years. The fund will got to the organizations Ensemble, Equitas and Institut Pacifique, which work with young people, the release said. Other organizations could be selected for funding in the future, it added.
